“Where did you come from?”
Sunny's Question
Sunny had carried the question for a long time.
Ginger was sitting beside the window, watching the garden move in the afternoon breeze.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he looked at Sunny.
“There was a place before this.”
“A shelter?”
Ginger nodded.
“I'll show you.”
Forty-seven days earlier · Haven Animal Shelter
Forty-Seven Days Earlier
Ginger was tiny.
Quiet.
Always watching.
He didn't push against the glass when people walked past. He didn't cry for attention. He simply sat in his corner and watched the world move around him.
Rose noticed. She was the woman who cared for the animals at Haven, and she had learned that quiet didn't mean a kitten had nothing to say. It just meant you had to pay attention.
Every morning, Rose checked Ginger's card. Every morning, she wrote:
Healthy. Calm. Patient.
Then she went on with her work.
Day 12.
Day 30.
Day 38.
Day 44.
Families came through the shelter. Children pressed their hands against the glass. People pointed. People chose. Doors opened. Other kittens left. And Ginger stayed.
The Corner
One afternoon, a child stopped outside his enclosure. The child looked at Ginger for a while.
“Why are you in the corner?”
Ginger glanced around.
“I like this corner.”
The child considered that.
“Oh.”
“It's a good corner.”
“Yes.”
The child moved on. Ginger watched the door.
He always watched the door.
For a few seconds, he wondered whether the footsteps might come back. They didn't.
So he settled into his corner again. Some kittens ran toward people. Ginger had learned to wait.
Day 47
On the forty-seventh day, Mama walked through the shelter door. She had come looking for a kitten.
Rose showed her the animals. Mama walked slowly past the enclosures. One kitten slept. Another pressed close to the glass. Ginger remained in his corner.
Mama walked past him. Then took another step. Then stopped.
“That one.”
Rose followed her gaze.
“That's Ginger.”
She glanced down at the card.
“He's been here since Day 1. He's in perfect health.”
Mama kept looking at him.
“I know.”
A quiet moment passed.
“I want him.”
Ginger had heard people talk about choosing kittens before. He had seen what happened afterward. A family would stop. Someone would smile. A door would open. And another kitten would disappear from the room.
But this time, someone was still looking at him. Not past him. At him.
He didn't know what to do with that feeling. So he stayed very still.
She didn't walk past him again.
Hello, Ginger
Mama crouched beside the enclosure.
“Hello, Ginger.”
Ginger looked at her.
“Hello.”
Mama had read Rose's notes before she arrived. She knew about the kitten who watched the door. The kitten who waited. The kitten who never demanded to be noticed.
Rose had noticed him for forty-seven days. Now Mama had noticed him too.
Rose reached for the latch. A small click.
Ginger knew that sound. It usually meant another kitten was leaving.
He didn't move.
Rose opened the door.
“Come on, Ginger.”
Ginger looked at Mama. She was still there. Waiting.
He took one step. Then another.
The space outside his enclosure suddenly seemed enormous. The door behind him remained open.
For the first time, it was opening for him.
The World Outside
The garden was bigger than anything Ginger had known. He stopped at the edge of it.
“It's big.”
Mama smiled.
“I like it.”
At home, he found a table by the window. A quiet place to sleep. A garden beyond the glass. A cup beside Mama's tea.
Small things. Nothing that would have seemed important to anyone else. But to Ginger, everything felt new.
He looked at Mama.
“This is home?”
“Yes.”
Ginger thought about it.
“Okay.”
And he stayed.
Ordinary Things
After that, the days became ordinary. And somehow, ordinary became everything.
Every morning, Mama made tea. Ginger sat beside her at the table. There were lessons. Meals. Rainy afternoons. Quiet evenings.
Sometimes Sunny drew while Ginger watched. Sometimes nobody said anything at all. The garden waited beyond the window. Life became familiar.
But Ginger never forgot Haven. He remembered Rose. He remembered the corner. He remembered the footsteps. Most of all, he remembered the door.
On a shelf at home, there were little reminders of where he had come from. And among them was Rose's card.
Healthy. Calm. Patient.
What About Day 48?
Sunny was quiet for a while. Then he asked the question that had been waiting underneath all the others.
“If she hadn't come on Day 47…”
Ginger looked at him.
“What about Day 48?”
“I would have been there on Day 48.”
“And Day 49?”
“Day 49.”
Sunny thought about that.
“And Day 100?”
Ginger looked toward the window.
“As long as it took.”
Sunny lowered his pencil.
“How did you know someone was coming?”
Ginger smiled.
“I didn't.”
“Then why did you keep watching?”
The room became quiet. Ginger looked toward the door.
“Because the door was there.”
Sunny didn't answer. Neither did Mama. There are some answers that don't need anything added to them.
The Call
Later that evening, Ginger called Rose.
“Hello, Rose.”
There was a pause. Then:
“Ginger.”
He smiled.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For every day.”
Rose was quiet for a moment.
“Of course.”
Ginger looked at the shelf. At the old card. At the words she had written forty-seven days ago.
Healthy. Calm. Patient.
He smiled.
“That's why you're here.”
Rose understood. And after the call ended, Ginger returned to the table. Sunny was waiting, his pencil resting above the page.
“Where were we?”
“B.”
“B.”
And the lesson continued.
The Card
On the shelf, Rose's card remains.
Healthy. Calm. Patient.
Forty-seven days before Mama came, Ginger was still there. He has been home every day since.
And somewhere between those two facts was the beginning of everything. The garden. The table. The tea. Sunny's drawings. Luna's arrival. The stories still waiting to be told.
Ginger looks toward the door. Not because he is waiting anymore. Because he remembers.
Some doors take a long time to open. But that doesn't mean they were never meant to.
This is where the door opened. 🧡
