The Poster
One day, Ginger was walking home from school when something caught his eye.
It was a poster, taped crookedly to a lamppost.
KITTENS NEEDS HOMES
Ginger stopped.
He looked at the picture. Then he looked at the shelter address underneath it.
He took the address with him.
By the time he reached home, he was still thinking about the kitten who might be waiting there.
“Please.”
At lunch, Ginger sat across from Mama.
He told her about the poster. About the shelter. About the kitten who needed a home.
Mama listened.
Ginger looked at her.
There was only one word.
“Please.”
Mama looked at him for a moment.
Then she agreed to go and see.
Ginger didn't need to say anything else.
The shelter · A small room full of waiting
At the Shelter
Mama and Ginger arrived at the shelter and walked inside.
Kittens tumbled over one another near the front of their enclosures, pressing close to the glass.
Ginger looked past them.
In the back corner of the last enclosure, a tiny kitten sat alone on a piece of cardboard.
He wasn't asking for attention.
He wasn't trying to get anyone to notice him.
He was simply there.
Ginger knew that feeling. He didn't know how he knew it. He simply did.
He stepped up to the enclosure.
The little kitten looked up.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Ginger slowly reached out his paw.
The kitten looked at it.
Then he reached back.
One paw found another.
Mama watched them.
She understood.
Going Home
Mama made her decision.
The tiny kitten would come with them.
Ginger stayed close as they left the shelter together.
For the kitten, everything was new.
The doorway. The rooms. The sounds. The light. The smell of a home.
He looked at everything.
Ginger watched him discover it all.
A Whole New World
The little kitten watched Mama cooking in the kitchen.
He watched Ginger move through the house.
He explored one new thing after another.
A table.
A bowl.
A window.
A place to play.
A place to sleep.
Ordinary things.
But for him, they were the beginning of a completely new world.
And Ginger loved watching him discover it.
His Name
That evening, Ginger sat down with a piece of paper.
He thought for a moment.
Then he wrote a name.
Sunny.
That was the beginning of his name.
The little kitten who arrived without a home now had a family. And a name of his own.
The First Family Evening
They ate together.
Ginger and Sunny played outside.
Sunny followed Ginger and watched everything he did.
There would be letters to learn.
There would be drawings.
There would be lessons and adventures and many ordinary days still ahead.
But that first evening, Sunny simply had a place to be.
Not Just a Friend
That night, Ginger, Sunny, and Mama slept together.
Ginger was happy.
He hadn't only found a friend.
He had helped a little kitten find what Ginger already knew mattered most.
A family.
A home.
Someone who would notice when you were waiting.
And Sunny was no longer waiting alone.
